The Winter School will consist in two courses of
10 hours each, given by :
This school is part of the Metric geometry, algorithms and groups program at the I.H.P., which is twinned with the Discrete Analysis program of the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences. It will be held at he Institut Henri Poincaré(I.H.P.) from February 2 to 8, 2011. The courses are part of the Graduate program of the I.H.P and of the École Doctorale des Sciences Mathématiques de Paris-Centre and are addressed to non-specialists. Participation of postdocs and PhD students is strongly encouraged.
The idea of describing the geometry of Banach
spaces using the
concepts of type and cotype has emerged in 70's. In the last ten
years, it has been revisited in the context of non-linear spaces and
successfully adapted to study of the geometry of metric spaces and
their distortion through Lipschitz embeddings. These courses will be an
opportunity to learn a variety of tools and results, which range from
convexity, to probability and harmonic analysis.
Two courses of 10h each, from Wednesday 2 to Tuesday 8 with a break
on the week-end.
Follow the links for a description of the courses.

Be sure to book your hotel very early (at least a month in advance), since accommodations in Paris are difficult to find. Click here for a list of hotels.
The Institut Henri Poincaré (I.H.P.) is easily accessible by RER or Bus. Click here to see a map.
We will welcome all participants Wednesday, February 2 at 9h45 in the Cafeteria of the Institut Henri Poincare with some coffee, tea and viennoiseries.
Please note that the talks of the first half - Wednesday, Thursday and Friday - will be held in the Amphitheater Perrin (and not in Darboux, which seems to be slightly too small). The Amphitheater Perrin is located in the "Physics" building just in front of the IHP building. To enter the building press the red button. The Amphitheater Perrin is then on the left of the entrance Hall. All these informations will be recalled in the entrance of the IHP, together with directions (everything is within a radius of 20 meters)
